In the Studio

I wont tell you how many years but lets just say it's been a while since the day I brought home my first bass guitar. I had no idea how to play it and no idea that it would become such a defining part of the man I would grow to be. Every "dude" with a instrument, driving their parents crazy in the garage (I've had the cops show up to my rehearsals plenty of times) dreams of being "signed". It felt a little different than I always pictured. There were no bottles of champagne, no one showed up to work the next day wasted and faxed pics of their ass to corporate and we didn't smash any of our equipment. Instead, it just felt like a step in a long journey, like it was supposed to happen.

Little Brother Project signed a contract last week with Houston based Second Floor Records and we are very excited. We have been expecting this move for a while and have been working out details of our deal. Both sides of the table are very happy with what was decided and looking forward to a great and long lasting relationship.

They put us to work right away and we started recording for our second album on Saturday the 22nd at Clark's Recording Studio downtown. Those of you who have heard our first record "Urban Ocean", you probably have noticed that it's kind of "songy" compared to our stage show. Although we love that CD, this time we wanted the record to better reflect what we do live. To accomplish that, what we decided was to go into the studio and treat it like a show. We wrote a set, started it and kept going until we had recorded everything. For anyone who doesn't know, that is very out of the ordinary. You usually spend a day or more just getting the basic tracks recorded for each song and then come back and overdub all of the solos, vocals, fills, fixes, ect.... We are trying to be bold enough to have our record tell you exactly what we sound like. So we went in, we improvised, we wrote new parts and the songs were just part of the whole experience just like a LBP show.

We now are waiting for a rough mix of what was caught on tape so that we can each individually take it and see what we are happy with and what we would like to add or take away. I've heard a very little bit and am very happy with it.

On a personal note, I am still awaiting the right heart for me and to be totally truthful, I'm quickly declining. I have went from feeling like they were going way overboard to hoping transplant will come soon so that I can start on a road to feeling better. I am becoming a prisoner of my house and getting out to record on Saturday would have been great for me even if we had sucked. Luckily Second Floor Records believes in us as well as me and are willing to be doing the behind the scenes part of all of this until I am ready to come back at full strength (Thanx).

So we will keep you informed on everything, we are expecting the entire process of releasing the album (it needs a name, anyone with ideas, please feel free to email me coy@littlebrotherproject.com ) to last a few months and specifically where it goes from there is still being worked out (stores, websites, ect..). In the mean time you can see pics of the recording taken from what will eventually be a video at www.sevenandahalfseals.com

Thanx to Second Floor, (we are very excited to be part of the family and we are bringing a lot of LBP family with us)
Thanx to Eric-we thought you were great, (recording engineer at Clark's recording studio)
Thanx for all of your support,

Happy Two Thousand Phyve

So there it is, another year gone by and another LBP New Years Party at Dean's. It might have been the best one yet and it almost didn't happen (at least for me). If you've been following along, you know I am awaiting a heart transplant. Well, last Tuesday, I got the call (or so we thought). They brought me in, got me ready for surgery (even knocked me out) but decided that the heart would not work after all because the aorta was too small. So they sent me home. That was good news to me because it meant that I got to play the New Years show.

The evening started at about 6, we all got to Dean's to set up and rehearse (we hadn't played together since this transplant stuff started which was almost a month ago already). We set up, sound checked and worked through a couple of "easily F-upable" songs (and tried to remember "Auld Lang Syne" - we basically did). After that it was off to do whatever it is we all do and we met up at about nine at the "Walker Sister's Second Annual Pre-LBP New Years Eve Party, New Years Eve Party". Slowly the place filled in with old friends and new faces and we moved the entourage over to Dean's.

One of my favorite things about our New Year's shows is the fact that we set up hours in advance, go hang out and then walk into an already packed club and just start playing (it's quite the rock star behavior). We were all happy (and a little surprised) to find out that we were still a good band and the show was great from start to finish. This year's show contained less debauchery than last year's (no strippers - oh, I mean "dancers"). I took their place on the bar but I don't think I had the same effect as they did. Chrissy, Jordan, April, Debbie and Lindsay (mine) made up for it later with their own Coyote Ugly impression (look for pics soon).

I am always blown away by the LBP family, we feel so lucky to have a following that consists of intelligent music fans. You guys "get it" and we appreciate it. It means so much to us that you not only packed the joint last night but also created such an amazing vibe for us to play along with, thank you. Obviously New Year's Eve is a big night for all of us and it means a lot that you guys continue to choose to "ring it in" with us. Again, thank you.

So on to 2005, we (because of me) have a pretty empty calendar right now. We start the recording of our new album on January 22nd and after that who knows. All we know is that we are all committed to staying together and continuing to be LBP. This year will probably not include a lot of music for for me but it will for the rest of LBP (I'm kind of looking forward to sneaking in to a show without telling anyone and heckling the crap out of them - "Hey Mr. Guitar Dude, why don't you get off Trey's nuts"?).

So Happy New Year from all of us in LBP,
Thanx for all of the E-Mails,
Thanx for your support,
Coy - LBP Bass

p.s. I hope you don't mind but I plan to keep updates here on the Blog with what goes on with me this year. It seems to have become a convenient way of keeping my friends "in the know".
