Leaving the Embarrassing Parts Out

90.1 KPFT is "listener sponsored radio" - it's kinda like PBS except their Sesame Street characters are actual hippies straight out of the 60's who's views are so far left of center that they would make Ted Kennedy seem like Rush Limbaugh (or as I like to call him "Flush Poopball"). Like PBS they have to do fund drives every few months. Friday night (11/5) LBP played a live set on KPFT's "Dead Air" program and they were right in the middle of one of those fund drives.

O.K. - there's the set up - so what happened was through those circumstances the "Dead Air" host set me up for a great one liner but I couldn't get a word in and missed my chance. So here's what I wanted to say......

Host (jokingly) - "There's just so much we have to pay for to run a radio station. There's the electric bill, the water bill, we have to pay someone to mop the floor and polish the door knobs and wash the windows and.........."

Coy - "That's fine for the windows and mopping but I'm sure it's illegal to pay someone to polish your knob".

Besides missing my chance for blue comedy stardom, the radio show was great (although we only got to play three songs, it's amazing how quickly we can blow through an hour). We have been lucky enough to play on KPFT a handful of times and it's a huge honor every time.

Saturday (11/6) we were at The Last Concert Cafe'. We had been looking forward to this show for a while, it's definitely one of our favorite places to play. I thought I had gotten there fairly early but when I saw that Marc had already been there, set up his gear and disappeared I didn't know what to think (Marc and Phyve are huge rock stars and we all know huge rock stars are never on time). After I set up, I ran into Beatty's Dad who recently had surgery. It was good to see him out and about, he seemed to be doing well and I wanted to to take time again to wish him a fast recovery. My little sister April and her Joey were there and we had time for a few beers and a few laughs while we waited for the rock stars to return.

Houston is beginning to really have a "jam band" community and Saturday's opener, The Psychadillos, are a big part of it. They're very talented musicians with a great laid back vibe that carried over to our set.

The crowd was a little, well......little but energetic and this was a very good show. There are times when musically everything just seems to go right and playing is exactly what it's supposed to be......Fun. The Pshcadillos' guitarist (Brad) & Keyboard player (Randy) joined us on stage for what we thought was going to be a short little jam to end the night (LCC has a great soundman, Alan, who told us the improvised jam was something like 38 minutes long). It was one of those nights that seemed to end with everyone who was there (including us) leaving feeling like they had just experienced something.

The other guys would want me to write about what I did to myself during sound check. They would want me to write that I walked up to the edge of the stage trying to hear what it sounded like out front. They would want me to write that I stepped off onto a large speaker in front of the stage. They would want me to write that this speaker was very unstable, that it flipped out from underneath me sending me heels over head flying to imminent doom. They would want me to write that I landed on my head and had a Flinstone lump about the size of my fist that lasted all night long. They would want me to write that the whole incident happened in front of a bunch of strangers who all came rushing to save me. They would want me to write that the next day my wife observed that my "lump" was really a huge hematoma and she's really pissed that instead of going to the hospital like I should of, I stayed there while everyone had a good laugh at me and my lump's expense. But I'm not going to write about that, clearly it would be way too embarrassing.

So what I'll tell you instead is that, this week, LBP procured a deal to record our 2nd full length album. It will be part studio recorded and part live album. The live part will be recorded at Clark's (on Main st, downtown - right next door to Dean's) on December 5th and you are welcome to come and be part of the experience.

Thanx for checking in with us,
Thanx to all who listened Friday and came to see us on Saturday,
See you all soon,
Coy - LBP Bass

P.S. If you were one of the few who witnessed my President Gerald Ford like fall the other night, please don't tell anyone. It's a secret.
